DomainGuard

Tells you whether a domain name carries risk from a previous owner, before you buy it.

Free Live

Check a domain

Type the name you are about to buy. The check reads public records only and takes under a minute.

No account. Nothing is charged. The check reads public records only.

The problem

A domain name that is available to register is not the same as a domain name that is new. Most short, meaningful names on sale today are available because they expired and dropped, which means they arrive carrying whatever the previous owner did with them: parked advertising pages, a spam operation, an abandoned business, or a site that was removed for cause.

You inherit that history the moment you buy. It can cost you an advertising account, an email sender reputation, or months of search visibility you never knew you were missing.

What DomainGuard does

You give it one domain name. It reads the public record for that name and returns a single verdict with every finding behind it.

What it reads

  • Official registry record (RDAP). Whether the name is registered now, and when the record was created.
  • Web archive. Every stored capture of the home page, how many are distinct versions, and how many addresses on the domain were ever archived.
  • The source of each archived page. The decisive check. Advertising and parking providers leave fingerprints in the page source, and a domain that ever served ads under another party account carries that relationship in ad network records.
  • Certificate history. Certificates issued for the name and its subdomains.
  • Live DNS. A, MX, TXT and NS records as they stand right now.
  • Parking nameservers. Whether the name currently sits with a parking or brokerage service.
  • Current safety status. Whether the name is flagged today.

What you get back

One verdict, in plain words. CLEAN means no prior history was found at all, which is the only state that carries no inherited risk. CAUTION means something was found and is named for you to weigh. DO NOT BUY means a disqualifying finding, printed with the exact record it rests on.

Under the verdict, the report lists the content eras it examined with a link to each archived capture, the fingerprints it detected, the sources it checked and what each returned, and the checks you still have to run by hand.

What it cannot do

  • No search engine or ad network publishes an interface that declares a domain banned. Every result here is inferred from public traces.
  • A clean result means no evidence of a problem was found. It is not a guarantee that none exists.
  • Web archive coverage is incomplete. A domain can be registered and parked without ever being archived.
  • Ad networks keep their reputation data private. No outside tool can read it.
  • An advertising account can also be disabled for account level reasons that have nothing to do with the domain.

Price

DomainGuard is free, and it is meant to stay free. It is the tool by which you judge whether the paid tools on this site are worth your money.

Status

DomainGuard runs on this page. There is no account and no sign up. A result is kept for seven days so a repeat check of the same name returns at once.
